Imerovigli: the quiet balcony above the caldera

The highest point on the caldera rim, and arguably its best view — with a fraction of Oia's crowds.

Imerovigli sits on the highest point of the caldera rim, between Fira and Oia, and is often nicknamed the island's "balcony to the Aegean." It's smaller and far quieter than either of its more famous neighbours, with a concentration of high-end caldera-view hotels and relatively little else — no bus station bustle, no late-night bar strip.

Skaros Rock

The village's signature landmark is Skaros Rock, a dramatic volcanic outcrop just below the village that once held a Venetian fortress, now eroded away. The walk out to it along the cliff path is one of the best short hikes on the island, and a popular, much less crowded alternative to watching sunset from Oia's castle.

Why choose it over Oia or Fira

If your priority is the caldera view itself, with a calm, residential atmosphere rather than crowds or nightlife, Imerovigli often edges out Oia — you get comparable, some say better, views with a fraction of the foot traffic. The trade-off is fewer restaurants and shops within walking distance, and a car or taxi is more useful here than in Fira.
