Oia's castle ruins are the famous sunset spot for a reason — but they're not the only place on the island to watch the sun drop behind the caldera, and in peak season they're by far the most crowded. A handful of alternatives give you a comparable view with room to actually enjoy it.
Imerovigli and Skaros Rock
Slightly further from the sun's exact setting point than Oia but arguably a better angle on the caldera itself, and dramatically less crowded. The walk out toward Skaros Rock is a favourite for exactly this reason.
Fira's northern lanes, toward Firostefani
You don't need to leave the capital — walking a few minutes north from central Fira along the caldera path gives an open, uncrowded view with plenty of bars and restaurants happy to seat you for the show.
By boat
Sunset catamaran cruises, typically departing from the old port or Vlychada marina, put you on the water looking back at the island's silhouette — a genuinely different perspective, usually including a swim stop at the volcanic hot springs beforehand.
Pyrgos
From the hilltop castle ruins at Pyrgos, near the centre of the island, you get a wide panoramic view that takes in most of Santorini at once, rather than the tight caldera-and-sea framing you get from the rim villages.
