Oia: the sunset village, without the scrum

Santorini's most photographed village earns the crowds — here's how to actually enjoy it.

6 min read Places & villages

Oia (pronounced roughly "EE-ah") sits at the north-western tip of the caldera rim and is the village behind almost every postcard image of Santorini — whitewashed cube houses, blue-domed churches, and a sunset that draws crowds to the old Byzantine castle ruins every clear evening.

What makes it worth the crowds

The architecture here is the most tightly preserved on the island, and the setting — houses cascading down the caldera cliff toward the sea — is genuinely dramatic in a way photos slightly undersell. Beyond the sunset spot, Oia's back lanes have galleries, jewellery workshops and quieter cafés that most day-trippers never wander into.

Handling the sunset crowds

The castle viewpoint fills up an hour or more before sunset in summer. Two better approaches: arrive early and claim a spot, or skip the castle entirely and watch from one of the many restaurant terraces or the quieter lanes just south of the main viewpoint, which offer nearly the same view with far less elbow-to-elbow crowding.

Getting there and around

Buses run regularly from Fira, especially around sunset — though they fill quickly, so join the queue well ahead of time. Parking in Oia itself is limited and often a walk from the village centre; if you're driving, budget extra time. The village is best explored entirely on foot once you arrive, and much of the historic centre is pedestrian-only.

Best forFirst-time visitors who want the iconic view, photographers, and anyone happy to trade some crowding for the most complete version of Santorini's postcard scenery.
