Alongside standard short stays, a growing number of travellers are booking Santorini for weeks or months at a time — remote workers taking advantage of location flexibility, or simply travellers who prefer a slower pace than a one-week holiday allows. It changes what to prioritise when booking.
Where it makes most sense
Villas and apartments with a proper kitchen (see our villas guide) suit long stays far better than a standard hotel room — cooking some of your own meals meaningfully changes the cost and pace of an extended stay. Inland and southern villages like Megalochori, Pyrgos and Messaria (see our respective village guides) tend to offer better long-stay value and a quieter, more residential rhythm than the caldera rim.
Practical considerations specific to longer stays
- Seasonality matters more — a month booked in August looks very different from a month in October or April, both in cost and in what's open; see our best time to visit guide.
- Monthly discounts are common on longer bookings through vacation rental platforms — worth messaging hosts directly to ask, since discounted long-stay rates aren't always the headline price shown.
- Internet reliability varies by property and area — if remote work depends on it, ask specifically about connection speed and any backup options, rather than assuming a "wifi available" listing is sufficient for video calls.
- Off-season closures (see our best time to visit guide) matter more on a long stay — check what's realistically open for the specific weeks you're there, especially outside summer.
Our take
A long stay is one of the better ways to experience Santorini beyond its postcard version — enough time to actually settle into a village, revisit favourite spots, and avoid the rushed, checklist feeling a one-week visit can have. It suits a slower, more independent style of travel more than a first-time highlights trip.
