How many days should I spend on Santorini?
Three to five days covers the highlights without rushing. Two nights is technically viable but genuinely tight. A week gives you time to go slow and explore beyond the main villages — see our 3-day and 7-day itineraries.
When is it too crowded?
July and August are the busiest months by a significant margin. Oia's castle viewpoint at sunset in August is a genuine wall of people. May, June, September and early October give you most of the experience with noticeably fewer crowds — see our best time to visit guide.
Is Santorini worth the cost?

Do I need to rent a car?
Not if you're staying in Fira and primarily doing caldera villages and beaches — buses cover those routes well. You need a car (or scooter/quad) if you want to explore the south and west: wineries, Akrotiri, the lighthouse, Pyrgos. See our getting around guide.

Should I stay in Oia or Fira?

What are cave suites actually like?
Carved into the volcanic cliff, naturally cool, often with arched ceilings and limited windows — atmospheric, but darker inside than photos suggest. Full details at cave suites, explained.
What's Imerovigli like compared to Oia?

Is the Oia sunset worth it?

How long is the Fira to Oia walk?

Can I swim in the caldera?

Beaches
Does Santorini have nice beaches?
Different from most people's "nice beach" image — volcanic black and red sand rather than white, with dramatic cliff backdrops instead of palm trees. If you specifically want a white-sand Mediterranean beach, Santorini isn't the right island. If you want something visually striking and unusual, it delivers. See our beaches guide.
Which is better, Kamari or Perissa?
They're very similar. Kamari has a slightly livelier promenade; Perissa/Perivolos has a quieter, more spread-out feel. Both are worth a day. See Kamari and Perissa guides.
Wine
What wine is Santorini known for?
Assyrtiko — a dry, high-acid white with volcanic mineral character, grown under conditions that exist almost nowhere else. See our Assyrtiko guide.
Is the wine expensive?
Relative to other Greek wine regions, yes — the manual harvesting and extreme growing conditions add cost. Relative to comparable-quality European whites, it's usually reasonable. Tasting directly at wineries is consistently better value than buying bottles in tourist-area shops.

Is it safe to fly a drone?
