Santorini's terrain and climate are specific enough that a generic beach-holiday packing list misses a few things that genuinely matter here.
Footwear, more than usual
The caldera villages are built on steps and uneven cobbled lanes, and paths like the Fira-to-Oia hike and the walk to Red Beach cover loose volcanic rock. Comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes matter more here than flip-flops, even if you're not planning a formal hike.
Sun protection
The caldera path and most of the island's beaches offer little natural shade. High-SPF sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are worth prioritising over what you'd pack for a more forested or shaded destination — and note that black-sand beaches (see our beaches guide) get noticeably hotter underfoot than pale sand.
A light layer for the evening
Caldera-rim villages sit exposed to sea breezes, and evenings can turn cool even after a hot day, especially outside high summer — a light jacket or wrap is worth having for sunset watching.
What you probably don't need
Heavy hiking boots (the walking here is steep but not technical), and a large suitcase if you're staying in a cave suite with limited storage or step access — see our cave suites guide for what to expect.
